White-tailed Eagle Transnational conservation strategy First activities started!

The White-tailed Eagle, one of the most majestic but also threatened species along the Danube River, is focused by a joint conservation strategy of DANUBEPARKS. An internationally renowned expert has been entrusted with the planning of this transnational strategy.

Literature research has been finished already and can be downloaded here, at the moment data collection from the various Protected Areas along the Danube is done with the help of a questionnaire.

After this, site visits and task force meetings will enforce the discussion process for setting up the common conservation strategy and action plan.

Though the future strategy is not ready yet, of course several partners are implementing monitoring and protection activities in their respective areas already now. For example, nests have been monitored and the young White-tailed Eagles ringed in the Slovakian Protected Landscape Area Danube Floodplains. In Slovakia and Hungary the contact between Protected Areas and experts from Universities and NGOs has been intensified for the harmonization of monitoring and ringing programs. Also, Protected Areas and forestry institutions are working together in various countries to allow for reduction of disturbance in relevant nesting sites.
