Danube WILDisland RRI awarded by EUSDR's Flagship Certificate

We are proud to announce that the Danube WILDisland Ramsar Regional Initiative has been awarded the Danube Strategy Flagship Certificate! This recognition marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to conserve and sustainably manage the unique and vital ecosystems along the Danube River.

What are Danube Strategy Flagships?

Danube Strategy Flagships are distinguished projects or processes that make a substantial contribution to the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR). These initiatives are selected based on their clear macro-regional impact, multi-level governance approach, and their importance in fostering economic, social, and territorial cohesion within the Danube Region. Additionally, they play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for the inhabitants of the region.

Beyond their immediate impact, these flagship initiatives enhance both internal and external communication regarding the Strategy, increasing the visibility of important topics, initiatives, and opportunities in the Danube Region. They serve as prime examples of the progress achieved through the EUSDR, showcasing how cooperation within the region can lead to significant improvements.

The Danube WILDisland Ramsar Regional Initiative

The Danube WILDisland Ramsar Regional Initiative, officially approved in June 2024 by the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands, represents years of dedicated work by DANUBEPARKS and other members of EUSDR's PA 6 Biodiversity, Landscapes, and Air & Soil Quality. This initiative focuses on the protection and sustainable management of the "WILDislands" – a series of natural and semi-natural riverine habitats along the Danube that are critical for biodiversity conservation.

As a newly recognized Danube Strategy Flagship, this initiative not only highlights the importance of protecting these unique habitats but also exemplifies the power of cooperation in achieving significant environmental and social outcomes in the Danube Region.

Looking Ahead

The DANUBEPARKS Network of Protected Areas, alongside our partners and stakeholders, is excited to continue driving this initiative forward. With the support and recognition of the Danube Strategy Flagship status, we are even more committed to delivering impactful conservation efforts that will benefit the Danube Region and its communities.
