Restoration works have started at the DANUBE4all demonstration site in Sződliget, Hungary, which is managed by the DANUBEPARKS member Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate (DINPI).
As a first major step, both river groynes at the site have been opened, allowing water to move more naturally through the area and supporting the restoration of natural flow and sediment dynamics.
Due to the current low water levels in the Danube, the restoration works cannot yet be completed in full. The channel between the groynes still needs to be dredged, and this part of the work will continue once water levels rise sufficiently.
The restoration aims to improve river connectivity and create more favourable conditions for fish and other aquatic species. By allowing water and sediments to move more naturally, the measure is expected to support biodiversity and contribute to the restoration of more dynamic and naturally functioning river habitats.
The start of the works marks an important milestone following a long period of planning and preparation. DANUBEPARKS congratulates Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate on reaching this stage and looks forward to the continuation of the restoration activities.
