DANUBEPARKS & SavaParks - Study Exchange Visit in Lonjsko Polje

From 13 to 15 October 2025, the LIFE WILDisland project partners gathered in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park (Croatia), one of the largest and most important preserved floodplain areas in the Danube River Basin.

The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for experience exchange between members of the DANUBEPARKS Network and the SavaParks Network, further strengthening collaboration between Protected Area managers along the Danube and the Sava rivers.

During the meeting, DANUBEPARKS presented its ongoing projects, including DANUBE4all and DANUBEdragonCONSERVATION, as well as our Citizen Science initiatives (Persina4Danube & Osijek-Baranja Citizen Science Hub) and the Danube WILDisland Ramsar Regional Initiative.

On the second day, participants joined a field trip to several sites within the Park, where they observed successful grazing management practices that help maintain the balance between nature conservation and traditional farming. The group also learned more about the Park’s unique water management system, where regular flooding remains a fundamental natural process shaping the dynamic landscape of Lonjsko Polje.

DANUBEPARKS extends sincere thanks to Lonjsko Polje Nature Park for their warm hospitality and for sharing their long-standing experience in managing one of Europe’s most valuable wetland ecosystems.
