First Steps towards a cross-border conservation concept Austria-Slovakia

One of the activities concerning Habitat Networks is the elaboration of a cross-border conservation concept for the floodplain areas in the border region of Austria and Slovakia (between Donau-Auen National Park and Bratislava).

During the last months, a study has been carried out concerning the structure and quality of forests close to Wolfsthal village, shortly after the inflow of Morava River into the Danube. Special attention was paid to forest structure, presence of old tree species, as well as beaver activities. Potential areas for revitalisation and water management changes have been noted as well.

In June 09, a study visit has also been carried out, when the Slovakian partners came to Austria for the opening of the Slovakian exhibition in Orth Castle. Tomas Kusik and Matus Kudela (both BROZ), as well as representatives of other environmental organisations in Slovakia, went for an inspection of relevant areas together with Georg Frank (Donau-Auen National Park).
