III Steering Group Meeting of the Danube WILDisland RRI

On 21 October 2026, the Steering Group of the Danube WILDisland Ramsar Regional Initiative (RRI) held its third online meeting, bringing together representatives from Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Moldova, and DANUBEPARKS.

The meeting focused on reviewing the Initiative's progress, approving key planning documents, strengthening partnerships, and discussing opportunities to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Annual Report and 2027 Work Plan Approved

An important outcome of the meeting was the formal approval of two key documents:

The Annual Report provides an overview of the Initiative's activities and achievements during 2025, while the newly approved Work Plan outlines the priorities and planned activities for 2027, supporting the implementation of the Initiative's Strategic Work Plan 2025–2030.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Steering Group members were updated on current activities and ongoing developments within the Initiative, including efforts to advance wetland conservation, restoration, and regional cooperation along the Danube.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress and discuss the next steps in implementing the Initiative's objectives.

Strengthening Partnerships and Cooperation

Another important decision was the approval to invite potential observer organisations to join the Initiative.

Broadening participation through observers is expected to strengthen cooperation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and create new opportunities for collaboration with relevant regional and international organisations.

Financial Sustainability and Future Funding

The long-term financial sustainability of the Initiative remained an important topic of discussion.

Members emphasised the importance of continuously identifying new funding opportunities through relevant programmes and projects, while also exploring possibilities for additional support at national level.

Diversifying funding sources will remain a priority to ensure the continuity of the Initiative's activities and its long-term development.

Acknowledgements

We sincerely thank all Steering Group members for their active participation, constructive contributions, and continued commitment to the Danube WILDisland RRI.

Their engagement and cooperation are essential to advancing the shared goal of conserving and restoring wetlands throughout the Danube region.
