Persina Edu Summer Camp 2025 – Science, Games, and Adventures in Nature
From 1 to 4 September 2025, the first edition of Persina Edu Summer Camp took place in Persina Nature Park, Bulgaria, as part of the Community Engagement for Wetland Conservation – Persina4Danube project, implemented by DANUBEPARKS. Nineteen children, supported by five volunteers and three expert lecturers, explored the world of citizen science, biodiversity, and nature conservation through hands-on activities and outdoor adventures.
During the camp, participants learned the basics of citizen science, including bird and plant observation, water monitoring, and field research techniques. Lectures and practical sessions introduced them to the park’s rich biodiversity and conservation initiatives, such as the successful reintroduction of the Dalmatian pelican in Bulgaria and the tracking of migratory birds via satellite transmitters. Children also gained experience with digital tools like the SmartBirds Pro app, which allows citizens and specialists to collect and share wildlife data.
The highlight of the camp was the adventure game “Forest King”, in which children applied their newly acquired skills to identify plants by sight, touch, and even taste, observe birds, and analyse water samples. Among their discoveries were the rare Trapa natans (Devil’s Waternut) and the park’s emblematic grey heron (Ardea cinerea). Creative workshops, including making bird feeders from recycled materials, provided additional fun and learning opportunities.
At the end of the camp, children received certificates, wildlife-themed badges, and books on amphibians and reptiles, fostering curiosity about other protected species in the region.
The Persina Edu Summer Camp 2025 was a great success, and due to its positive reception, we hope similar educational activities will continue in the coming years, inspiring more children to become young researchers and ambassadors for nature.
The camp was funded by the IMPETUS Consortium under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
